Once Narad Maharaj was traveling when he came upon a saint worshipping under a banyan tree and another saint worshipping under a peepal tree. The saint under the banyan tree bowed to Narad Ji and said, "You always meet God. Please ask Shri Hari: will I ever have your darshan? And if I will, when will it be?" The saint under the peepal tree asked exactly the same question. Narad Ji asked God. For the saint under the banyan tree, God said, "I will meet him in this very life." But for the saint worshipping under the peepal tree, he said, "Tell him that as many leaves as this peepal tree has, that many times he will take birth and do bhajan, and only then will I meet him."
Narad Ji traveled a long way. He met the saint under the banyan tree first and told him. The saint under the peepal tree did a full prostration. "Maharaj, did God meet you? What did God say?"
God said, "Given how slow your bhajan is progressing, it will take as many births as this peepal tree has leaves." He danced! What didn't he understand about taking birth? For him, the point was this: God is seeing me. I am doing his bhajan. God knows me, doesn't he? He cried out, shouting, "How compassionate you are, O Hari! How much love you show! I am in your sight! You know me, that I am doing your bhajan!"
At that very moment, God manifested and embraced him. Narad Ji said, "You have made me a liar! You just said that given how he was progressing, it would take as many births as this peepal tree has leaves!" God replied, "Yes, if he had remained as he was. But such intensity of bhava, such overwhelming joy arose within him that what I wanted to give has already happened. My darshan is now his. But tell him—God did say what he said, sir."
