Why is it necessary to hide your naam jap?
By the grace of the sadguru, by the grace of the Lord, if there has arisen even a slight attraction in our heart toward the Lord's holy feet — if our mind has begun to engage in sadhana, or if we are experiencing some inner benefit from the worship given by the guru — then we must take one very great precaution.
That precaution is — not revealing the benefits of our sadhana, but hiding them.
Why is it necessary to hide?
Ego is extremely subtle. It lies hidden deep within the sadhak. As soon as there is even the slightest success in sadhana, or even a little experience of the Lord, ego raises its head — "Now let people know how devoted you are to bhajan, how great a bhakt you are."
This is the subtle trick that becomes the cause of the sadhak's downfall.
The great ones say —
"Keep bhajan secret. Do not make it public."
If we discuss our sadhana with someone — saying that I do this from such a time, I chant for so many hours, I do such sadhana — then that sadhana gradually disappears. The joy that was there, the sweetness that was there, the depth that was there, all fade away.
Because when experience came into speech, it became external; and what has become external does not endure.
Hiding is the ornament of sadhana
The great ones have said —
"A bhakt is not recognized by their bhajan, but by their humble silence."
The true beauty of bhakti lies in its secrecy. Just as a person does not tell everyone about the wealth kept in their vault, so too the sadhak should keep their bhakti and their experiences within the heart.
When we receive worldly wealth, we say — "Let no one find out." Then why display the divine wealth of bhakti? It is even rarer!
The subtle net of ego
Ego cannot bear that someone might not consider us a sadhak. If someone says — "You don't do any bhajan!" — then from within a wave arises: "I could tell you what I do!" This is the moment when the sadhak begins to stray from their path.
The true sadhak is one who knows from within —
"My heart is attaching to the Lord — it is simply the Lord's grace. There is nothing of me in this."
The example of Vibhishan Ji — the art of hiding
The scriptures give the example of Shri Vibhishan Ji. When "Ram" was seen written on the walls of his hut, Ravan came in anger. Vibhishan Ji said —
"Brother, the 'Ra' stands for Ravan and the 'Ma' stands for Mandodari — I have written both your names."
This is the marvelous art of hiding.
Bhakti is running within, but outwardly there is nothing visible that would nourish pride.
This is why their bhajan remained unbroken and ultimately they reached the presence of the Lord.
Reasons for keeping bhajan secret
- Protection from ego: Speaking awakens ego. Hiding preserves humility.
- Stability of bhajan: When experience is revealed, the sweetness diminishes. Hiding increases the sweetness.
- The Lord's test: The sadhak who keeps their worship secret is truly dedicated.
- The guru's command: The sadguru's word is — "Hide your bhajan. Otherwise your sadhana will vanish."
Ekangee prem — the highest state
In the words of Shri Bhai Ji Maharaj, this feeling takes an even more remarkable form. He says —
"I do not wish anyone to know anything of this state of mine,
And let this forever remain unknown even to my Beloved Lord."
This is the state of ekangee prem (one-sided love). Where the bhakt wishes that not only the world, but the Lord Himself should not know how much I love Him.
Because love is pure only when it is one-sided.
When the hope of reciprocation is attached to it, then an element of desire enters it.
Through hiding, bhajan expands
Just as sandalwood does not proclaim that it is fragrant —
Those who approach it themselves experience it.
Similarly, the true bhakt does not publicize their bhajan.
Its influence, its fragrance spreads on its own.
Those whom the Lord wishes will benefit from their words, their feelings, their presence.
"When the Lord reveals, that light cannot be extinguished.
But when we reveal ourselves, the inner light is extinguished."
Conclusion — Hiding is protection
The secret of bhakti is this — "Hide it, do not publish it."
The sadhak who keeps their experiences, their chanting, their feelings within —
Their bhajan deepens day by day.
The divine joy in their heart continuously grows.
And whoever begins to display it,
Their sweetness gradually dries up —
Because they become hungry for "honor and respect," not for the Lord.
Final Message
"Keep your bhajan secret, hold your experiences in your heart,
Do not speak — so that it continues to grow.
When the Lord wishes, your light will spread throughout the world on its own."
