The Complete Discourse
In the Bhagavata, in the eleventh canto, there was a Titiksha Brahmin living in household life. He had sons and daughters. He earned abundant wealth and had a very miserly nature. He neither let his family enjoy nor did he himself enjoy. Now circumstances turned adverse. Not every day is the same. Royal tax was imposed on him, and much of his wealth went into taxes. Then his family members saw that he was miserly and would not give even a rupee. They exchanged knowing glances with one another, and then a dispute broke out. His family abandoned him, leaving him completely alone. No one loved him.
His wealth slipped from his hands. Then he pondered everything. My entire life has passed. I was born in a superior varna. Old age has come upon me. What will happen now? What will happen? Those whom I raised, the wealth I earned with great effort, it has all been destroyed. My family members don't even look at me. You know what his resolve was. The gods are witnesses to this: from this day forward, I dedicate my life to the feet of Shri Bhagavan. I will endure all suffering and I will ceaselessly sing bhajan to Bhagavan. Through that very determination, he became such a great soul that Bhagavan is narrating his story to Uddhav Ji.
