Sadan Ji was just a child. Some relatives came. His father had brought a small calf. They would keep cutting (meat from) it there. His father said, "There is not much meat in it. In its legs there is meat, so we welcome our guest this way."

When Sadan Ji heard this, he went to the calf and held it like a child would. The calf said to him, "My father is saying like this—that you will be cut, and yet he is caressing you like this."

Tears came from the calf's eyes too. So it said, "Tell your father that it would be proper if he cuts my neck first."

Then Sadan Ji said, "Why do you say this?" The calf replied, "Because in a past life I was in a similar situation. Your father was an animal, and I cut his neck."

"So I have become an animal now. Tell him he should cut my neck first. Don't cut me alive piece by piece."

"I did not cause you such suffering in the past—I cut your neck directly."

This means: whatever karma is done, its fruit is definitely received.

"I cut your father's neck in a past life, which is why I have had to become an animal in this birth. And your father will definitely cut my neck. You cannot stop it, because that is the law."

This incident deeply moved him. A being must experience the fruit of their own karma.

Through many lives, one day a group of sants came. He went before them and bowed at their feet. He was just a child. The sants said, "Get up, get up, child." Weeping, he said:

"Every action's fruit must be experienced by the being. Is there any practice by which one need not experience the fruit of karma and attain liberation while living?"

The sants replied, "A being should hold the Lord's naam continuously, chant naam constantly, and neither cause suffering to any being, and keep the company of sants—then one will attain liberation while living."
