Full Discourse
O Vrindavaneshwari, your lotus feet, the nectar-taste of love, full and heart-quenching, O sweet Lord, remembering you, grant the supreme cool shelter. The supreme cool shelter—the supreme consciousness, embodiment of divine love, the new nikunj, most magnificent, most sacred Shri Vrindavan dhaam, the darling of Shri Vrindavan dhaam, the beloved rulers of the divine couple, most worshipful, most dear to life, Shri Priya and Pritam, to whom all the attendant circle of saints, birds, deer, animals and creatures, plants, the Yamuna, queens of rasa and realm, millions of Braj residents repeatedly bow and offer salutations at their lotus feet again and again.
See, when God takes an incarnation, He does not see whether the soul is sinful or virtuous—He grants everyone the supreme abode. Whoever comes into His sight, or whoever takes Him into their sight—both—whether they harbor ill feelings toward God or good feelings, God does not see that. He bestows their wellbeing. But at other times, God showers grace.
I have equal compassion for all, all are equally beloved by me, all are my creation.
Now what happens is: when God's grace falls upon the soul, the soul disrespects that grace. God's compassion, God's grace, the company of saints, the practice of worshipping God, instruction, engaging in worship—all of this is immeasurable grace. But the soul's misfortune, its sad state, is that it considers the body as itself, seeks pleasure in indulgences, and thereby scorns God's grace.
Then comes misfortune and wandering. Filling the belly or indulging the senses in pleasures—animals have this too.
Great fortune to attain a human body, which is rare even for the gods, as the sacred texts sing.
What is this rare human body for? The name is fleeting—yet it is rare to have the precious vision of the Lord. This rare human body—what is it for? To worship, to control the senses, to attain God. Those are most unfortunate who, turning away from God, find satisfaction in indulgences. Their lives are headed toward ruin, but they do not understand. They are headed into a dark well. They do not understand. They enjoy pleasures due to the effects of past merit, yet they commit sinful deeds in the present. As a result, when the sinful deeds of your past and the sinful deeds of your present combine, such utter ruin will befall you. Then no one can save you.
That is why there is grace now. The grace of saints, the grace of the guru, the grace of the scriptures, the grace of God—all are upon you. Have compassion on yourself. Follow what the saints, the true guru, and the scriptures command. Then, beloved, you will be saved, you will be liberated.
Shripad Prabodhanand Ji Maharaj says: "Quickly, quickly! Oh fool, attachment to son, wealth, and wife spreads. Death approaches every moment."
Oh fool, quickly, quickly—do it fast, do it fast! You have not subdued death. Death can destroy your body at any moment, at any time. Any dreadful disease could come, and all your senses will be overwhelmed. Suddenly a report comes—cancer is found, kidney failure is found, your heart is weakening. It could fail at any time. When will it fail? You could fail right now. Understand this for certain. Making excuses is one thing, but when a fatal disease strikes the body, even the strong lose their senses and fall into depression—no sleep at night, no appetite during the day, no peace.
That is why, if you connect with God beforehand, then when everyone is afraid of dying, my mind is full of bliss. "When did I die? [I am in] complete supreme bliss—I am going to meet my Beloved. What is death? It is leaving the body to meet my Beloved."
Quickly, do quickly! Attachment to son, wealth, and wife—this wife, this son, this wealth, this house, this splendor will not go with you. With you will go the name of God. The dharma you practiced through service will go. The service to God you rendered with your body will go. This body is subject to death. It can be lost at any time. Do not trust in it. It can slip away at any time.
Someone stands at a betel leaf shop, having betel on their motorcycle. "Two, three betel leaves—hurry up, friend, I'm getting late." Then they fall off the motorcycle. They were hurrying for betel, and death took them in that moment. Someone sits in a restaurant with food before them, betel filling their mouth, [they say] "Radhe Shyam"—at any moment they cannot eat even one morsel. If the time comes, they cannot even take a breath. Not to speak of saying Radha.
That is why, as long as you have breath, in the present moment, chant the name. Radha, Radha, Radha—your future will be auspicious. Your past will be purified. Your future will be auspicious. Chant the name in the present. This is not rare. Wife, son, wealth, property—these are all found in sinners' homes.
Son, wife, wealth, and prosperity are found in sinners' homes; the company of saints and the discourse of Hari are rare, says Tulsi.
Among all rare things, the rarest is divine love. God can give even liberation, but love is not easily given. This sacred Vrindavan dhaam, manifest on earth, its shelter, its dwelling—directly grants the love of Priya and Pritam.
If one dwells there faultlessly, if one remains there—
May the mind's intelligence become devoted to Vrinda's forest realm, firm in the supreme consciousness-bliss form.
Shri Radha Muralidhara—the servant bows at their lotus feet.
Oh foolish one of foolish intellect, even now come to Vrindavan. Sit for a while, listen to satsang. On the sacred banks of the Yamuna, sit and chant the name, chant the mantra, sing with voice, perform naam kirtan. Because in Vrindavan, even a little worship bestows the form of consciousness-bliss.
In Vrinda's forest realm, firm in the supreme consciousness-bliss.
Here, if one practices sadhana with even a little devoted intelligence, the fruit is very great.
Vrindavan is illuminated by the form of consciousness and bliss. Through impure conduct, you commit offenses here. That's why you don't experience it. Vrindavan is an ocean of love. It is blissful. It grants the form of consciousness and bliss. But why don't you experience it? Because you maintain an impure intellect. Even coming here, if you continue the same impure conduct, impure speech, impure vision, impure behavior—if you perform those actions inspired by tamo-guna and rajo-guna in these mixed qualities—then abandon them, and the servant of Shri Radha Murlidhar who grants you wondrous joy will provide Vrindavan to you.
This supreme Vrindavan, worthy of worship above all worthy ones, is the great abode. It has great glory. A little charity, a little merit, a little bhajan—much is obtained here. But consider the opposite. A little sin, a little falsehood, a little untruth, a little immorality and misconduct becomes like a mountain. It is difficult to bear. And sin in this place is like a thunderbolt. That is, it is not quickly erased. If it can be erased, only Radha Madhav can erase it, because it is an offense against their abode. May they show grace. May they give the command. May the presiding powers of this abode, Shri Shyama Shyam and Vrinda Sakhi, grant us freedom from offenses.
No, here there is the sole rule of Vrinda Sakhi. If anyone commits even the slightest offense anywhere, it is immediately noted. There is great vigilance here—this is the abode of Bhagavan. If one remains free from offense, then the great joy of the form of consciousness and bliss, of Radha Madhav, awakens in the heart the das bhava, the devotion of being a servant to one's Beloved Lord. Therefore, in the attainment and progress of human life, each one of us should contemplate Bhagavan and conduct ourselves well, perform sattvic conduct. Let us go to the Shrimad Bhagavat Mahapuran. In the abode of Nanda, new festivals are happening every day. Because Shri Lalju Maharaj, the embodiment of the great festival, the form of bliss, resides there.
Mother Yashoda is taking delight in nurturing her Lala in her lap and watching as she rocks the cradle. Sometimes the Lala cries out in joy, sometimes opens his eyes and looks toward Mother.
तो यशोदा हरि पालने झुलावे यशोदा हरि पालने झुलावे हलरावे दुलरावे मलावे जोई सोई कछु गावे जोई सोई कछु गावे जोशोदा हरि पालने झुलावे
Thus Yashoda rocks Hari in the cradle, Yashoda rocks Hari in the cradle, caresses and soothes him, whatever whoever sings, they sing, thus Yashoda rocks Hari in the cradle.
Come sleep to my Lala, why do you not sleep, why do you not come quickly? If she comes, who will call? Sometimes Hari closes his eyes, sometimes his lips quiver. When sleeping he is silent, we tell it—the poet says Hari closes his eyes.
Brother, the Lala has fallen asleep. All the maidservants should be careful—there should be no sound. My Kanha has fallen asleep. What fortune—the master of infinite millions of universes in a cradle, and Mother is experiencing a joy that even great yogis in their meditation cannot attain.
That Lord's beauty while sleeping, silent, we tell of sleep, the Lala has fallen asleep, no sound, no sound of vessels, nothing. After sleeping a bit, becoming restless, the Lord opened his eyes.
In this moment, restless, Hari awakens, O Mother Yashoda, again and again placing her hand on the Lala's chest. Sleep, sleep, Yasumati sings sweetly. The joy that even the devas, immortals and sages find rare—the wife of Nanda obtains. Yashoda rocks Hari in the cradle.
Look, in the Lord's leela we see this—it never remains the same. There is joy, then hardship, then joy again, then hardship again. Mother saw that the Lala had fallen asleep in the cradle. She warms milk with her own hands for the Lala. She churns butter with her own hands. She is engaged in service. Meanwhile, Kansa became terrified. Putana was killed. It was certain. This is no ordinary child—he has already on the sixth day killed the mighty Putana. Kansa is very suspicious and terrified. At that same time, present in the assembly was Kakasura, who had taken the form of a crow with a beak and talons like thunderbolts—so powerful he could kill the devas. This mighty Kakasura stood up and laughing said, "O King, you have become so anxious over one child!"
Kansa said, "You haven't heard what happened today? That child killed the mighty Putana who was six kos tall."
"There is no cause for concern." He said, "O King, give me one chance. I will destroy your worry from the root."
Kansa felt that he was both strong and intelligent. "Then, my friend, if you can do this, our friendship will become even stronger. Go, and in the abode of Nanda, this newborn Lord who has just bloomed like a fresh lotus—see how they adore him—kill him."
Inspired by Kansa, Kakasura, who had taken the form of a crow, first went to Braj Mandal, then toward the house of Nanda Baba. Taking the form of a small crow, he saw with delight that Shri Krishna was sleeping in the cradle. Upon seeing the intruder, the Lord became terribly angry. The black crow, with its beak and talons like iron thunderbolts. The Lord, even while lying down, clenched his fist. And the crow rushed to strike at the Lord's fist. Mother was engaged in her service. Look how the Lord plays—otherwise Mother would be very frightened, and the crow could have attacked her. So Mother went about her service. The Lala was lying in the cradle. As soon as he lay down, he clenched his fist. And the crow attacked. With flashing talons like thunderbolts, it struck at the fist. When the crow struck at the fist, the Lord grabbed its throat with his right hand. He twisted the neck many times, gripped it, threw it, and hurled it far. Then, spinning it, he killed it such that it fell dead in front of Kansa.
Kansa saw that it was Kakasura who had just left the assembly saying, "You worry—I am going and will kill him and return." It fell dead in front of Kansa. For a period of time, medicines were administered to him. Then he began to regain some consciousness. But his throat was still hurting greatly. He said:
Hear, Kansa, then came the Lord of the dhaama, taking the form of the avatar to accomplish the destruction of the mighty one—he did it with one hand, my life is finished. Hear, Kansa, then came, O Lord, the destroyer of Kansa, the avatar who took form for the bhakta. Taking the form of the great mighty one, with one hand he accomplished my destruction.
He spoke with great difficulty because the Lord had choked him. "Kansa, this is no child—this is an avatar of some great power. With just one hand, he grabbed my throat and threw me."
A demon named Utkarsh stood up and laughingly said that you become a great helper with strength, but you don't have the power. Kans said, once I wish you would give me an order.
This Utkach is the son of Hiranyaksha. This happened before the Chakshusha Manvantara. One day this Utkarsh went to Rishi Lomas' ashram. Seeing the beautiful tapovan, he felt jealous of the Rishi's ashram. He made a large body and began to destroy the entire ashram. The tender-hearted Rishi Lomas wanted to forgive him. But he did not stop his arrogance. [The Rishi] said, be peaceful and go. Then he saw that this wicked one would not listen. So he said, "Vidho - be without body, you wicked one! You have great pride in your body. Let your body be destroyed now. Vidho bhava durmte." The words were not even finished when Utkach's entire body melted away completely. Now as wind, as wind form, he is calling out repeatedly saying, "Forgive me, O Rishi! I repeatedly ask you for the gift of life. Forgive me, I am in great suffering."
The anger of the great souls is like a line drawn in water - that is all. And even that anger is for his welfare. They never get angry when there is an obstacle to fulfilling their own selfish desires. When there is an obstacle to the welfare of others, that is when they get angry. And that anger too lasts for just a moment, like a line drawn in water - it disappears. [The Rishi] began to show great compassion and affection. "Well, you are suffering greatly. For some days you will have to endure this suffering. When Bhagavan Shri Krishna, the form of Sat-Chit-Ananda, takes his avataar, then through his hands your liberation will come. You will attain your true form." Much time had passed. Tormented by hunger and thirst, in the form of wind, he wandered terribly.
Kans said to Utkach in his wind form, "Truly, can you kill that child?" Utkarsh laughed and said, "You have not yet seen our terror. If I am speaking among the assembly:
ब्रज भीतर उपज्यो मेरो रिपु मैं जानी यह बात दिन ही दिन वो बढ़त जात है मु को करिए घात धनुज सुता पूतना पठाई छिनक माज संहारी और घीच मरोर दियो काग गा मेरे ढग फटकारी एसो कौन मार है ताको मोह कहे सो आई वाको मार अपुन पो राखे सुर ब्रजह सो जाई
There is born in Brij my enemy, I know this matter. Day by day he is growing, bringing destruction to me. The son of a demon, Putana was sent. In an instant she was destroyed. And the crow too was shattered. In his way he has brushed it aside. Who is such a killer? Whom they call the bewilderer - when he came to attack, he was destroyed. He who keeps the gods protected, he goes to Brij.
Kans said, "You speak such things among the assembly, but I don't believe it. Because he has killed Putana, he has destroyed Kagasur. Who could kill that child? It would be like pouring ghee into blazing fire." From Kans' words, Utkarsh became filled with pride. In his arrogance he began to say, "I am the commander of the demons, the son of Hiranyaksha. Even though I don't have a body, can't I destroy all of Brij in the form of wind?"
Kans said, "Go, try once yourself." In the form of a whirlwind, like the way a whirlwind spins around and around, in such a form he took shape. He pressed his palms together:
दो कर जोर भयो उठ ठाड़ो प्रभु आयस मैं पाऊं आते जाए तुरत ही मारो
Hands pressed together, stand firm, O Lord! I accept your command. As he comes, I will strike him instantly.
And he said to Kans, "You be glad. Say the word - I will kill him and throw him down, or bring him alive before you." Kans praised him lavishly. "Bravo, hero! Go, kill him!" With the resolve to take the life of the son of Brajendra, that terrible demon set out from Mathura toward Brij.
And Brajendra Nandan, the rare lotus feet sought by the lords of yoga, by the lords of sages - to kill him who is even the great time beyond time - fear keeps arising within him. "He killed Putana. He destroyed Kagasur. What if... what if Rishi Lomas took my body from me, and now he will take my life too?" Fear keeps arising. Then he stops. Then he gathered courage and arrived at the boundary of Baba's palace and is circling around. Like the way wind moves and swirls, like a whirlwind, moving as if doing circumambulation of Baba's palace. On all four sides he is circling.
It is the dawn of the junction between autumn and winter. All around, joy and only joy is spread throughout the Brij mandala. Among the retinue of Brajendra, Mother Yashoda - today as every day, there is celebration. Sometimes it is the celebration of a star, sometimes it is another celebration. In the very form of celebration itself, she is engaged in arranging this celebration. Every day calling the Brahmins, performing abhishek, giving charity, feeding the Brahmins, worshipping the cows, calling the residents of Brij, feeding them. Every day there is celebration.
Along with Rohini Ji, they are engaged in service. But gently, while serving, they catch a glimpse of Lala. Peacefully Lala is sleeping. If there is even the slightest doubt, she runs over. She picks Lala up and holds him close. She feeds him milk, then puts him back to sleep. The Lord wakes, food is offered, adornment is done, then food is offered, then sleep comes, then awakening, then food is offered, then adornment is done - and again this is it. This is the eight-fold service that Yashoda Maiya is performing. Rohini Ji and Yashoda Maiya are engaged in service, and the nursemaids and maidservants are also following their commands.
Sometimes the Lord cries out loudly. They run. The nursemaid, Yashoda Ji, Rohini Ji come near. Small rattles kept ready and jingled. In this way, the Lord who is the master of countless billions of universes cries out in joy. Nand's son - some are playing rattles, some are singing. In the meantime, gently, he turned to his side. Oh! Today my Lala turned to his side! There is a celebration of him turning to his side! For the first time Lala has turned to his side! He turned to his right side. What is there to say then to Maiya? Boundless joy! Today there will be a celebration of him turning to his side! Our Lala has turned to his side! All at once the sound of celebration arose.
Inform father. Call the Brahmins. Oh, the darling has turned. Let them recite the mantras. Give him cows as a gift. The child has turned over by himself. He turned over on his own. Mother Yashoda kisses his mouth. She holds him close to her heart. At this very moment, hearing the news, the child turned over. Father and the elderly cowherd men arrived. With verses and chants celebrating the occasion and the great celebration, the great festival—father has come. Today my child has turned over by himself. It is a festival, but not just any festival—it is a great festival for all of Braj. Today the child himself, through his own power, has turned over. Father, this is the power he possesses. We have never seen it—the child climbed on the chest and broke a doll. He twisted the Kesi demon.
This is not seen in mere parental affection. It seems to them that God, our Lord Narayana, has protected my child. At Nanda's door, the sound of conches, drums, flutes, lyres, and mridanga echoed. The maidens of Braj sang auspicious songs and entered Nanda's palace. With sacred grains, grass, turmeric, and sandalwood in their hands, groups of gopis came. The greatest of the Braj kings, Nanda's son, washed the feet of all the celestial sages and filled golden vessels with jeweled grains as gifts. He gave beautiful, precious clothes, jeweled ornaments, and pearl garlands to all the celestial sages.
Then he gave cows in the millions. Nanda and Upananda and all—where God is, there is never any lack. Give millions in charity and arrangements for millions more come about. Satisfied with the worship of Nanda, the Brahmins blessed him. The child lives forever. They bless from the heart. The women, the maidens of Braj, they sing the songs of the village in their own way. Braj's queen bathed the child with fragrant paste. When water is poured from above, the child coos with joy. See, happiness comes through bhava, through immersion in devotion.
There is a large vessel. First they hold him in their lap and apply the fragrant paste, then stand him in a large tub and perform the bathing ritual of the Lord with suitable water. How the Lord rejoices! His curled locks wave, his eyes are vast, his dark complexion smiles and he coos—when water is poured, he moves like this. The young maidens sing as they bathe little Govinda everywhere with water. After bathing him completely, mother dries him with her shawl. Then she tilts his eyes carefully and takes the kajal.
And she applies kajal to his large lotus eyes. When applying kajal, if a child were to cry—but the Lord does not cry, he calls out, does not cry, does not cry. She applies it so carefully. This is the bliss that comes from worship. Those whose eyes are as the sun and moon, they receive light. Those eyes—Yashoda and the Lord—if he acts like he will cry, she soothes him, "Do not cry, do not cry." But he does cry. So mother quickly places her milk to his mouth, then caresses him. "Oh supreme Brahman, supreme self"—how can one show such tenderness? This is the essence of bhava.
She is the mother and father of the universe, and Yashoda mother cradles him in her lap. When the sweet, nourishing milk of mother enters his mouth, with kajal-lined eyes, Nanda's son looks toward his mother. The mother becomes blessed, lost in herself. Some Brahmins arrived with kusha grass in hand, and making an arc with water from the peace vessel, they chanted mantras and sprinkled over the Lord. They performed the peace ritual. Drops of water fell, and Nanda's son grew drowsy. With the soft kusha grass sprinkling cool water, the Lord closes his eyes. Why? Because danger is hovering around. He is not sleeping, he is thinking—they are taking a long time sprinkling with the grass. If they take longer, it will sweep the danger away, so we will protect him, or first we will strike the danger. The Lord knows all, he is all-knowing. The sages praised the Lord's blessing for all the cowherd men's happiness. How does sleep come? It has come completely. Let no one stay around. Brother said, "Everyone go, everyone go. The child has fallen asleep. Let the child sleep." And that part of the cart that remains after removing the wheels is called the shakta.
Mother laid the child in the shakta bed. Come, everyone, come. That shakta is not just made of wood—it is adorned with emerald gems, ruby inlays, and all such jewels. It gleams. After the wheels are removed, what remains of the cart is called the shakta. Mother gently arranged pillows, laid him down, and told everyone, "Step away. The child has fallen asleep." The divine play, the cosmic power is arranging everything. Otherwise there would be chaos. The entire family would be distressed. Now Yashoda and Rohini and all the residents of Braj came to feed him and give him drink. To welcome Nanda's son—Yashoda's attention is fixed on that great demon who came to kill. Her eyes are half-closed. The demon Utkach came straight into the courtyard in subtle form and was extremely delighted that now the child lay beneath the cart.
He just had to increase his weight. He would rest on the cart, it would fall below, and the child would die. The wind-form Utkach made the cart his target—beneath it lay the child sleeping. The child looked at him. "Come, son. Your father is us. Yes, we are the world's father, but we are your father too. How much can you scheme? You think of us as a child? God looked with his vision at how fortunate one is to receive what great sages and saints seek through worship. God put his thumb in his mouth and began to suck on it, as if showing him, "I am awake, I am not sleeping."
There was no one around. Bhagwan performed such a leela that everyone had left. Besides, sucking on his thumb is the practice of the Prabhu. In it, Bhagwan with his own lotus hands takes the thumb of his lotus feet, and there is a shloka: Mukharvindampadarvinde vinaante sayantam vatashapatrasuta sayanan, balam mukundam — he brings his thumb to his mouth, playing all alone in the cradle, laughing and laughing, playing in his own way. When everyone had left, he was joyful. It is just like if a wrestler were to fight — he uses a bit of his own strength, and with his thumb he was tasting his own charanas. Look at the verses: Charanarvinde — the lotus feet. They anoint them with their mouths in service. Those who taste the nectar of the lotus feet of Shri Radha's beloved — the devas and munis grieve, for that nectar is rare and difficult for even Mohini to obtain. For this reason, everyone worships our feet.
The great sages and munis meditate on the charanas. So is there a taste in the charanas? Yes — Bhagwan himself holds his own feet and tastes his own thumb. At that very moment, the demon arrived. He reached Shakatasura with such force, and once Bhagwan saw him — Putana pothe koyam poto visamkatasakata dasate, saakshaat mrityu vidhata — he killed Putana. This tiny neel-mani killed Putana. Putana was so powerful, yet he killed her. I can hardly believe he killed Putana.
When Utkach saw this, he thought: today I will surely take his life. But then, he is so beautiful and so delicate — how could he kill Putana? Making this resolve, he sat on the cradle and began to add his weight. The asuri maya expanded, the weight grew heavier. He applied as much weight as he could from his asuri maya, thinking the son of Nand would be crushed beneath this, and Utkach did not know that Anant holds countless universes in a single pore of his body. Adabhut prachanda rom rom prati lage koti koti brahmand — in each hair pore are infinite universes. What does the asura know? With the intention of crushing Bhagwan, he put all his weight on the cradle. Bhagwan said: you are showing this for what purpose? He came to our house, he cried out in his voice. One foot like this, another foot like this — he pressed down on the cradle. The cradle is quite far from the cradle, yet from the tiny son of Nand, when he had become a dwarf — his first step went to Brahmlok. This is showing all his strength! The cradle is not moving at all. With just one foot of the little Nandan, applying all his strength, the demon Satasura — Utkach thought: if the other gopis come, our whole plan will be ruined.
Then he gathered all his resolve and through maya took all his strength, but all the maya comes from the Mayapati, who is Bhagwan. Where is the sweet play? The father and mother, nourished by the loving tenderness of the parents, little Lalu looked toward Yogmaya: this one is causing great disturbance. This is the tasting of the vatsal rasa of the son of Brij. He said: I am a child and this Utkach has come to cause trouble. Yogmaya said: Master, just your gesture is enough. Where the Prabhu was, the cradle turned upside down so that Shakatasura, the demon Utkach beneath it, and Yogmaya extended her power — Kichkicha — they squeaked and died. Bhagwan has infinite powers.
Inside, he was crying, weeping, making a piteous cry. Yogmaya stopped the sound. As if now Bhagwan were to appear here — no one would hear a word, no one would see a form. Whatever work Bhagwan does, he does it through Yogmaya. If Bhagwan were Yogmaya, then to each one to whom he must give darshan, only that one could see, only that one could hear what Bhagwan is saying. Others could not. So there the sound was stopped by Yogmaya. The gopis and gopa-gopis were screaming so much — the demon beneath the cradle, the cart beneath the cradle, and the pressure of Yogmaya was crushing, crushing it, he was dying, screaming, but no one in the house heard the sound.
Yogmaya moves at the gesture of the son of Brij. The demon died. But the touch of Shakatasura — Lalu's touch and the cradle touched it. So from the mere touch of Lalu's feet, from the touch of the cradle alone, the demon took on a divine form. His asuri body had died. Now Yogmaya does not let anyone come in Bhagwan's presence. Taking on a divine form before Bhagwan and at his feet, Yogmaya's command — immediately, there was no time even for prayer and supplication. He left by Bhagwan's permission, and now the sound reached the cradle. Do you understand? The cradle fell — how much time had passed? He had died. Then with joined hands he made a prayer, took on a divine form, and when he left, the sound of the cradle came — kharkhar khar — something fell, it sounded so that everyone came running. Brajesh is some distance away. Hey, what a terrifying sound of something falling! Rohini Ji, Yashoda Maiya screamed, tears flowing. The sound was coming from that direction — the cradle was there. Under the cradle was Lal!
Running in distress, Yashoda Maiya ran and looked — the cradle was overturned. She fainted. Something terrible has happened to my Lal. Rohini Ji saw that the cradle was separate. He was moving his own feet, crying out with joy. So Rohini said to Yashoda: sister, the neel-mani is safe. He is well. The word "kushal" brought Maiya back to consciousness. How much love she has for the Prabhu! She ran — my Lal, my Lal, my life! And she told her servants: I am absorbed in service; you come between and look — she scolded the servants. From a torrent of water, she was bathing Bhagwan. Yashoda lal, sala — if something happened to you, what would become of me? She cried greatly. Navneet, mridulus, tramasiko santike, ha kastam sakat bhumi patna bhangoy akasmat — Nand Baba and the elderly gopis of Braj thought: this tiny little Lal and how did the cradle flip over? This was made of strong silk ropes. How could this possibly happen? Tat yadi susta na brajdhika — and there would be some sound. Suddenly, how did it flip over? The rope would break, there would be some sound. How is it? Oh my tiny dark-complexioned one, my neel-mani, more delicate than butter, and this whole, entire cradle overturned and fell right next to him.
My very life is being torn out at the thought—if something happened to my Lala. This is how all the Braj residents feel. Shri Lal—the Maharaj—he brought out so many jewels and then gave them away in charity. Charity was constantly happening at Baba's place. Braj Rani speaks before all the cowherd men and women, saying: "You all give your blessing. It is by your blessing alone that nothing happened to our Lala. No, such a large cart had overturned. Something could have happened. You all give your blessings. We spread our lap and ask for blessings from all the Braj residents, from the Braj cowherd men—that our Lala never suffers any pain.
Now great care is being taken in Nand Bhavan. Brahmins were then called for well-being recitations and auspicious charity. Mother is holding Shri Lal Ji to her chest. At this moment some cowherd children came running, and they are always with Lal Ji. They are speaking something to Lal Ji in baby talk: "Mama, mama, papa, listen to my words, mother, mother, mother... when you run, when you stamp, uncle, my father... there, there, there..." In their baby talk they are speaking: "Mama, mama, listen, my, my, my... when you... uncle, your feet, my father, there, there, there, then, in that clear voice, he, he, he, he..." They are saying: "This whole cart, the entire cart with the soil overturned—Krishna did this! My brother Krishna kicked it! There, there, there, then in that clear voice, he, he, he..."
This whole cart with the soil overturned like this—Krishna kicked it! I saw from far away—Krishna, my brother, did it with a kick!" Baba said: "He can't even sit up straight on his own yet. If he kicks, won't the cart just flip over?" But those Braj children kept saying again and again: "By the blow of his feet, the cart flipped."
Baba gave him butter and said: "Yes, alright, go." Beyond motherhood there is no faith—remember, beyond motherhood there is no faith. The wealth of prosperity—Nand Ji and the old Braj residents—they did the calculation: how could such a firmly bound thing flip over? How could this be?" Baba said: "Do the calculations later. First fix the cart." Young and strong cowherd men—fifty of them in number—fixed the cart. The materials were arranged. The whole house was thoroughly purified with Vedic mantras. Perhaps Mother became very frightened from this cart falling. Now she should never leave Lala alone.
Whether it is Rohini Ji, or some sakhi, or Mother herself—one or two must always stay nearby. Nand Baba went into solitude and said: "O Narayan, dangers come at every step. How do you protect our son?" And he was not saying this—he was thinking: "The one from whom Narayan manifested is himself the original Supreme Being."
Now Brijeshwari—first of all, she would not put him down from her lap even for a moment. And if she did put him down somewhere, Rohini Ji or someone would immediately be there. As evening fell, Yashoda was putting Lala to sleep:
यशोदा मदन गोपाल सुवे देख सयन गति त्रिभुवन कम ई विरंच भ्रमावे
Yashoda, Madan Gopal, rest; see his sleep, the movement of the three worlds diminishes, Brahma wonders
When he sleeps, he gathers everything together and sleeps—it reaches to the brahma-realm. The entire infinite cosmos, destroying it all, he brings everything into himself and sleeps. Yashoda herself is putting him to sleep.
असित अरुणित आलस लोचन उभय पलक पर आवे जनु रवि गति संकुचित कमल जुग निश अल उड़न न पावे
His eyes are dark and reddish with drowsiness, on both eyelids it comes as if the sun's movement withdraws, as if the lotus closes at night, birds cannot fly
How beautiful—Lala, my Lal—with such small lips.
स्वास उधर उसित यो मानो दुग्ध सिंधु छवि पावे
His breath there moves as if the beauty of the ocean of milk flows
How there and there the Lord's breathing is moving—there is great beauty.
नाभि सरोज प्रगट पद्मासन उतर नाल पछितावे
The lotus of the navel appears, the lotus-seat, the cord extending down
That same cord, that same navel from which Brahma Ji was manifested—Yashoda herself is watching as Lala slowly falls asleep.
कर सिर तर कर श्याम मनोहर अलक अधिक सोभावे
His hand on his head, his dark, lovely form, his curls shine even more
सूरदास मानो पनगपति प्रभु ऊपर पन छावे
Surdas says, as if clouds hover over the Lord
जसोदा दा मदन गोपाल सुवे
Yashoda, O Madan Gopal, sleep
Morning came, and then Lal's daily routine began—bathing and everything was done.
सुभ्रा सुक्तम तदा लोचनम नवा केशम सरध विग्रहम भानु प्रभा भावम तमसत रोहिणी त युक्तम सह दिव्य बालका
Beautiful, well-formed, then the eyes, new hair, complete form, with the radiance of the sun, endowed with Rohini's qualities, together with the divine child
Rohini's Lal—Balram Ji—how completely fair and beautiful! Today Mother has adorned him—put kohl in his eyes, arranged his hair on his head, dressed him in dark blue clothes. Balram Ji prefers this most—the dark blue color. The Lord's divine form is fair, but Balram is just like Priyalal—what a pair they make! One fair, one dark. Like the sun's irresistible radiance is Balram Ji's. Such a supremely beautiful child. And here Yashoda has adorned the dark blue Shyam Sundar. Balram Ji is older. He is the most divine form of the Lord as a child. Balram Ji has been dressed completely. He wears a little yellow dhoti, such curly locks, kohl applied. Then Brahmins were called for the birth rituals and naming ceremony—because today the name will be given. Up until now, no name has been given. When Vasudeva left before, going to Mathura, he had told Nand Baba: "Do not make any grand celebration.
Our Lala is also here with you—Rohini's son Balram. If Kans finds out, it will be dangerous. So whatever celebration you make for the children, make it very secretly. Otherwise demons will cause harm." Until now, Balram Ji's appearance had not been seen publicly by any Braj resident. It was kept so secret—Rohini's child—the Braj residents have not seen him. But they have seen Lala through Baba. However, Balram Ji was hidden so much because Devaki Ji's six children were killed. So there was fear—Balram Ji is also Devaki Ji's child. He came, drawn by yogamaya into Rohini Ji's womb. He belongs to Vasudeva Ji. So Nand Baba kept it very secret. And before this, Balram Ji was born, but no celebration was held for Balram Ji's birth. Up to now, no celebration for Balram Ji. So much celebration has already been held for Nand's son. Up until now, Balram Ji has not been brought into the courtyard because of fear. Now for the first time, Balram Ji has been brought near Nand Nandan. Until now Balram Ji was kept in secret. With him alone his heart remains. But when Balram Ji saw Nand Nandan for the first time, tears of joy are flowing from Balram Ji's eyes.
The image is filled. It is as though samadhi has come upon seeing his Lord. Isn't this so, Shesha Ji? Rohini and Yashoda's son—their first meeting together. Pujya Radha Baba is writing about this first meeting here. Until now they had not met. What a surprising thing! How carefully Balram Ji was kept hidden. At an auspicious time, the divine child pair were kept separate in a secret palace. There was no entry for anyone. Only Rohini Ji would go and feed him. And today, bringing him out from there with such adornment—such a beautiful form did Balram Ji have as he came to Nanda's son.
The child cries out with gurgles. Now in one place are Ram and Shyam. The mothers see the pair and their hearts break—fearing the evil eye might fall on them. Rohini Ji, overflowing with great affection, said to Yashoda Maiya, "Bring the child here." And Yashoda Maiya took Balram Ji into her lap. Today the naming ceremony of Nanda's son will take place. Beautiful music with gentle rhythm was played. Vedic chanting was being performed. And the great sage Gargacharya came to perform the naming ceremony for both.
He said, "Listen. A divine inspiration has come to my heart. I am indeed known in the world as a teacher, but listen—if I perform this naming ceremony with divine inspiration, and if Kansa comes to know of it, he will certainly understand that this is Vasudev's own son, and he will surely cause some harm."
"Therefore, I wish this naming ceremony to be done in secret. I am the family priest of the Yadavas, but to tell you truly, Vasudev himself sent me." Nanda Baba was very pleased. He folded his hands and bowed at his feet. He said, "It is as though God Himself has arrived. Gargacharya, please be seated." He washed his feet, performed arti and worship, and said with great honor, "Bhagavan, the saints—they accomplish all works. They come to purify us householders like ourselves. That great souls like you should come to the homes of householders like us—this is the very form of supreme welfare.
"We are so entangled in our homes that our mind—look, how merciful God is, playing in our courtyard! We feel that for our welfare, God Narayana has sent great souls like you. Lord, you saints are beyond the realm of the senses and intellect. We cannot recognize you. But you are all-knowing great souls. You are learned in the science of astrology. You are the greatest among those who know Brahman. Please give your command." He said, "I am known in the world as the teacher of the Yadavas. If I were to perform an open celebration and give names to your sons, Kansa would be certain to understand.
"Kansa's mind is wicked. He always thinks evil thoughts. You have close friendship with Vasudev. And when he heard of Devaki's daughter, he decided that there cannot be another daughter of Devaki. There was a divine voice: the eighth son will be born. If he comes to know of this, then certainly harm could come. Let me perform the ceremony for your son, and if someone should see your son and think he is Vasudev's child and cause some harm—for this reason I have come. I will perform the naming ceremony, but I shall do it in secret." Nanda Baba said, "Teacher, let us go to the cow-shed.
"There is always coming and going in the palace. In the cow-shed it is completely solitary. We will close it and quietly—just the naming ceremony, only we and the child—" Gargacharya said, "That is right. I have come with divine inspiration to perform the ceremony. When Nanda Baba made such a request, then in solitude, in secret, in the cow-shed, God's naming ceremony took place. Gargacharya looked toward Yashoda Maiya. I told you before that with great affection, Yashoda Maiya took Balram Ji into her lap, and Rohini Ji took Shyam Ji. They sat like this in the cow-shed.
So Gargacharya, looking toward Yashoda, says, "This is Rohini's son. You who know the three times—this is Rohini's son. And this one will bring joy to all the worlds. Therefore, his name shall be Ram. And this is the form of immeasurable strength, infinite strength. Therefore, his name shall be Bal. And joining both names, he will be Balram. And this one will never make any distinction between the Yadavas and your people. Therefore, one of his names shall be Sankarshan. This one draws everyone toward himself. And this dark, beautiful one in Rohini's lap—what can I say of his glory?
"This one takes birth in every age. In ages past, he has accepted various colors—red, yellow, and others—and taken different incarnations. This time he has taken this dark form. Therefore, his name shall be Krishna. Gargacharya gave the name Krishna in the naming ceremony. God has infinite names. Nanda, this your son—he has appeared before in the home of Vasudev as well. He who knows this mystery, his name is the glorious Vasudev. Your son has so many names that if we were to recite them day and night, we could not reach the end.
"Infinite names, infinite qualities, infinite deeds. Those names, those qualities, those effects—I know them, but not all beings in the world know them. Gargacharya said, "This is the supreme form of welfare. This dark, beautiful one in Rohini's lap—this Krishna, this glorious Vasudev—this is the supreme form of welfare. He has appeared to bring you supreme welfare. He will bring great joy to all the cowherd people and the cows. With his help, you will easily cross over great calamities. Braj-raj—he has appeared in many ages past.
"Once there was no king on earth. Robbers and thieves had increased. So he took incarnation to protect the righteous and to destroy the wicked." This form was not named—which form was it? For God appears as Rama in the Treta age, and as Krishna in the Dwapara age. In a later age, demons had increased. He took incarnation to destroy those demons. Nanda, how can I tell you—this dark and beautiful one in Rohini's lap—in prosperity, beauty, and fame, he is just like God Narayana Himself.
You are very fortunate. Serve with great eagerness. After explaining well to Nanda Baba, Gargacharya secretly performed the naming ceremony and returned to his ashram. Nanda Baba was greatly amazed when Gargacharya said he had taken incarnations in previous ages. This one wept like Lord Narayan, saying, "This is all the grace of my Narayan." It does not enter Baba's heart at all that this is God. This is vatsalya—my dear child, this is the grace of Narayan that I have such a virtuous son.
One day Mother was lovingly holding the child in her lap, caressing him and nursing him with milk. The child kept drinking and Mother kept nursing him. Filled with maternal love, the thought came to Mother's mind that he is drinking so much milk, perhaps he might get indigestion. She looked at the child, thinking, "If he drinks so much milk, won't he get indigestion? But you have such a belly." The child smiled.
In the child's mouth, as if God was showing—Mother, I am not drinking this milk alone. The entire universe is being supplied from here. The entire universe is receiving this milk. The entire universe is blossoming, is becoming blissful, is becoming nourished. Mother, infinite universes dwell in my belly. The sky, space, the celestial sphere, directions, the sun, moon, fire, air, the ocean, mountains, rivers, forests, all moving and non-moving beings—Mother looked into the child's mouth again and again. "Why has the whole world appeared in my child's mouth?"
Suddenly she broke into perspiration. Maternal love rebuked majesty, saying, "You have no place here." At once that vision disappeared. Then maternal love surged. She said, "My child, something happened in my foolish eyes. I do not know—the world appeared in the child's mouth, and then I looked and the child was smiling." She hugged the child to her chest.
One day Mother was lovingly cradling the child in her lap and caressing him. God was as if a mountain in form. Yashoda Mother's legs began to ache. "How strong he has become. How can there be such pain?"
And on Kansa's side, when word reached him that those who had been sent had all been destroyed, he sent word that this would not return to him again. Kansa sent Trinavarti, who takes the form of a whirlwind. "Go." The demon came directly as a fierce whirlwind. God said, "Mother is holding me in her lap. Mother, if you hold me, he will carry you away too."
He became so heavy that Mother said, "Today the child has become so heavy. Why is there such pain?" From his heaviness, he fell to the ground. "Oh, how heavy the child has become!" And this is why God increased his weight—so that Mother would go away from here to serve. The child lay on the ground as if asleep. "Come, let me sleep a bit. We will finish the work." This is what God wanted. After that, remembering Lord Narayan, she went to do the household work.
Trinavarti saw a good opportunity. He was Kansa's servant. Inspired by Kansa, he came in the form of wind and picked up Lord Sri Krishna. From the courtyard to the sky, the entire Gokul was covered with dust.
No one could see anything. Just the terrifying sound of wind and dust-filled air. For forty-eight minutes nothing was visible at all. Darkness covered everything with dust. When the whirlwind passed, Mother ran to where the child was. The child was not there. Mother became very frightened. She lost her senses. She could not discern anything. Everywhere she looked there was only dust and storm. Like the condition of a cow when her calf is lost, Mother became distressed. She began to weep, and even fainted and fell to the earth. Such is divine love.
God seized Trinavarti, the whirlwind-form demon, by the throat. As he was lifted to the sky, God pressed him down, and made himself so heavy that Trinavarti could not bear it, could not move even one step forward. Lord Sri Krishna became as heavy as the Nilgiri mountains. When the child-form God pressed his throat, he became still. The demon died. His eyes bulged out. His speech ceased. His life flew away like a bird. Assuming his real form, he fell to the ground with a thud.
As soon as they heard the sound of his falling, the residents of Braj looked and saw, "Oh, this is a demon!" And Kanhaiya was on the demon's chest, just as he had been on Putana's chest. All the residents of Braj ran there. Lord Sri Krishna was resting on his chest. "How blessed is this demon, brother! Blessed, blessed is the Supreme Brahman, the Supreme Lord! His final breath is leaving from his chest. Who could be more blessed than this?"
The gopis ran and picked up the child in their arms. When Mother came to her senses, the child was placed in her lap. Mother, extremely joyful, repeatedly bowed to Lord Narayan. "O God, you have protected our child."
Yashoda Mother speaks to Baba: "It is a matter of great wonder. See what a great event has occurred. What star or planet is pursuing us? Since the child was born, there is always someone attacking. People say we are in great trouble. We say that when God incarnates, then trouble and worldly entanglement come here."
You are human. Whether you see the Rama avatar or the Krishna avatar - look, look, this demon put our child right at death's door. But our Lord Narayana gave him back to us alive and well. And that wicked one was consumed by his own sin. It is true. Righteous people are protected from all fears by their merit. We do not know what kind of austerity we performed. Yasoda Maiya was saying to Nand Baba - did you worship God, or give water to someone who was thirsty, or build an orchard or garden, or make some charity gift, by which our child, though he was near death, has been saved?
This is a great matter of good fortune. When Nand Baba saw that many inauspicious events were happening in Mahavan, he kept remembering what Vasudeva had said again and again. Vasudeva is a great yogi. He was saying that some inauspicious event would happen. The Lord, who is eternal consciousness and bliss, took an avatar for this very reason - so that these wicked people, who could never have been saved otherwise, he granted them the highest realm. Now Krishna and Balaram gradually began to crawl on their knees. In the courtyard one day - this child, Lal, our Maharaj was crawling on his knees.
See the power of devotion - the supreme Brahman, the Paramatma, crawling on his knees! What a play! In old houses there would be a threshold - a thick wooden threshold. And every day, what a pure household life! The mothers would bathe at 4 o'clock and worship the threshold every day. Every day - worshipping the threshold, lighting lamps, plastering with cow dung in front, and making designs with flowers - this daily work began at 4 o'clock. Here we sleep and wake at 8 o'clock. Darkness covers us. At 4 o'clock! And let me tell you, from 2 o'clock at night the grinding stone would be working. It was such that if someone grabbed your wrist, you could not pull free. And singing auspicious songs of the Lord, two would sit together. This way from house to house, singing auspicious songs. At 4 o'clock, after bathing and worshipping the threshold - like this, 50 buckets of water had to be drawn with 30 hands' length of rope! Would anyone's heart ever fail? There was never anyone in the village whose heart failed. There was never anyone who got heartburn. The food would digest itself. Such thick rotis, two liters of buttermilk, half a belly of jaggery. No sugar and no liver. And this was not once - this was the daily child-feeding.
They truly call it child-feeding. In a farmer's house - five or six thick rotis from the hearth, and two liters of buttermilk in a vessel, and with sweet jaggery, cut up. Look, Lal was swinging the spade, working hard. Now there is nothing left in farming. With a tractor one comes - meaning six to eight hours of ploughing. Then one bigha used to be ploughed. What a pure life it was! So Baba had a thick threshold. Now Lal crawled on his knees, and supporting himself on the threshold, and when he climbed onto the threshold, his belly got stuck to it. His back feet went up and his front hands did not reach forward, so he got stuck in the middle.
Now he started crying, and Devrishi Narada, playing his flute! Saw that the Lord was crying - so his front hands were not going forward and his back feet were not going back because he was stuck in the middle of Nand Baba's thick threshold. Looking around, he lay in full prostration and said: "Lord, move it away for me." The Lord said: "No, this is not for you, this is for Maiya. Stand quietly, go far away." There, Narada stood far away. "Cry, Maiya, cry." Hearing the crying, Maiya came running. "Oh my dear Lal!" She scolded the servants. Narada saw and said: "Maharaj, what a play! The joy of the threshold - could not reach!" There, in the Vaman avatar, such a great Lord is a strange player! Now these two players, Krishna and Balaram, gradually began to crawl on their knees. When they crawled on their knees like this, Maiya tied a belt around the waist and ankle bells on the feet. Such a jingling, jingling sound! The dark and fair pair, both playing in Baba's courtyard.
As if Baba is always in supreme bliss, and both look at each other and burst out laughing. One day Nandan held the jeweled pillar, supporting himself, and got up. He saw that Lal also places his finger. He smiles, the other also smiles. He does like this, the other also smiles, and Maiya watches this play while hiding. From Baba's jeweled pillar in the courtyard, from the Lal's various child-pastimes, that supreme bliss is coming to Yasoda Maiya, which even Brahma and others have not attained.
As they go along, they follow someone, and when that person tries to pick them up, they run behind on their knees like this! And Yasoda Maiya, Rohini Maiya, watching these, are filled with joy. The mothers' hearts are full of maternal love and affection. Sometimes now they began going outside the house, crawling on their knees, and when they returned with Braj dust on them, it was very beautiful. The mothers would pick them up, bathe them, dress them in new clothes, nurse them. When they nursed, sometimes they would smile like this. A gentle, gentle smile and little milk teeth.
What a wonderful sight! Maiya would drown in an ocean of joy. Balaram and Shyam now gradually stood up and began to walk. Now crowds of gopis gathered in the lanes of Braj. Shyam and Balaram came. Running, running, all watched their beauty. These great players - like when calves roam in Braj, they would grab the calf's tail, and when the calf ran, they would grab it even harder and run after it. The gopis all left their work and watched these pastimes of Bal Govind and would roll in laughter, immersed in supreme bliss. Krishna and Balaram - these two are great mischievous players.
Once, before the time of washing cows, they let all the calves loose. All the calves drank milk. Sometimes they would play with horned animals, sometimes with dogs. Yes, Paramananda Das brought the Lord - a yellow one, and there is a verse about it - the Lord, and what - are the dogs of Braj Paramahamsas? Great accomplished saints are these. The Lord picks them up in his lap to nurse them, and when brought home, Maiya says: "Look, how are you doing this? Playing such big mischievous games, such a player!" Sometimes with birds - all these are great saints of Braj. The mothers kept fear in their hearts.
Lest they do something that causes them harm. That's why the mothers couldn't even do the household work. They kept watching them constantly. They remained anxious about protecting them.
Now the sons of Yashoda and Rohini began to walk without support. Now at the start, from their own house, Krishna and Balram broke all the pots that were kept in the room. And all the fresh yogurt—not the yogurt from the day before—they broke all of it. Many gopis came to the house.
Mother said she would have to scold Krishna and Balram. So she caught them by the ears.
The frightened gopis watched and thought, "Oh, if only the Creator would fulfill my wish like this! If only they would also come to our house and break our pots, do such mischief secretly. Then I would catch them, then before us they would catch their ears. How can such good fortune come to me from within?"
Listen, dear devotees, this butter theft leela—don't just think of it like this. At Nanda Baba's place there were pots filled with yogurt and milk. The boy immersed himself in them all day but couldn't reach the end, there was so much milk, yogurt and butter. The gopis' desire was this: just as Yashoda Maiya is receiving happiness, if I could receive the same from Bhagavan...
That Bhagavan Krishna, the Braj boys, all the Braj women—to give them all joy, the sakha mandali, the eight eternal sakhis of Bhagavan, these eight sakhis and all the other Braj residents and the monkeys of Braj...
When they had to go to a house, the monkeys of Braj would watch from afar. When Nanda's son entered, they would all gather at the windows, because they knew the butter would soon be brought outside, Lord. Now he began giving joy to the Braj residents, house by house.
With anklets jingling ruzhan-ruzhan on Shri's feet, Nanda's son and Shyam and their sakhis and the gopis would arrange all the pots and hide away. And after watching the complete lila, then they would catch him. The rest of the discussion has come to Shri Radha Vallabh Lal.
