Complete Discourse
Nilamani arranged all creation's forms, Krishna's reflection held, lotus passion at the feet, peaked jewel nails forming, a moment's gem, in indvara all creation's friend how the reflection held, japa's flower at feet, sweetly fragrant how the nails appear, perhaps flowers on the path, not formation, to Krishna son of Vasudeva to Hari the Supreme Self, destroyer of suffering, to Govinda, I bow, I bow [shrieking] to Vasudeva, to the son of Devaki and Nand [singing] to the cowherd boy Govinda, I bow, I bow...
At Nand Baba's place, five days have passed since Janmashtami. There is excitement day and night among the Braj residents. Because all the people of Braj—young, old, young women, old women, everyone—are eager to see Baba's beloved son. But arrangements have been made. First the elderly gopis, then the young gopis, then the elderly gops, then the young gops—the gops' turn hasn't even come yet. The gops are very anxious. No one is listening to anyone. Everyone's heart has one thing only: When will I, Nilamani, get the vision of Shri Lal's lotus face? When a gopi returns from seeing him, another gopi asks her, "Did you see Nand's boy? What is he like?" She says: "How can I describe to you? It's as if his limbs are the leaves of a fresh tamala tree, so beautiful, as if he's the sprout of a new rain cloud, so fragrant. As if all the beauty of the three worlds has been gathered in one place. His cheeks are beautiful, his eyes are wide like bows. And since birth his eyes have been lined with collyrium. Whoever his gaze falls upon becomes enchanted. The gops become captivated. Now in Nand Baba's courtyard, for five days, celebration drums are sounding day and night. They peek in and see dancing taking place. Celebration songs are being sung.
Baba has made special arrangements for all the Braj residents. From where the celebration is happening in the courtyard, he cleared it to one side and made a path. All the principal Braj residents who were invited come forward one after another and are shown the view of the child from the delivery room from a distance. The main thing is: whoever sees and follows along is filled with such a flow that they don't want to leave. Then, filled with love, the Braj residents are made to move aside.
The entire fifth day passed. The entire night of the fifth day passed. Baba honored all the great musicians, dancers, singers—everyone. Today is the sixth day—the worship of the sixth day, which is called Chathi Poojan. The celebration went on all night. The celebration of Brijendra's son's birth is still not complete. Now this sixth celebration has arrived. Such a long celebration, day and night—neither Baba slept nor did the Braj residents sleep. The gopis of Braj made all the gops leave the courtyard. The Chathi Poojan will be performed. A beautiful space was prepared. In the middle, the sixth goddess was created from cow dung.
All the gods and goddesses, from whose grace [Krishna] shines forth, are being worshipped for their welfare during the sixth day worship. Brahmins were called. In the sixth day worship, they first perform the worship of Ganesh. Hari Om Gan Ganpati [shrieking] dear one [singing] Nidhi nidhi [singing] ...Gayatri [singing] ...Tripada Chaturpada Tripada [singing] ...Sva [singing] ...Sahta [singing] ...Sahya Purva Manodhara [singing] ...Anre [singing] Jaja Dusre [singing] [singing]
[singing] Dhan mein man Shiv Sankalpa Stu Kar [singing] Pte [singing] Ja Purva Yaksh Praja Ta Man Shiv Sankalpa Stutas Prajna [singing] [singing] Praja Yas Nte Kite Ta [singing] Man Shiv Sankalpa Stem [singing] Bhutam Bhavanam Bhava Parmate [singing] Sarvam Sapta Ho Ta Man Shiv Sankalpa Stu Jasjan Pratishthita Prathame Sarva Praja Dhanya [singing] Mana Shiv Sankalpa Stu [singing] Manushyte [singing] Ji Ta [singing] Man Shiv Sankalpa Shashthi Devi's worship is being performed with great beauty.
With sixteen offerings the Shashthi Devi worship was done. According to family custom, Shashthi Devi was offered prasad. There was arati. Holding Gopal, Yasoda worships the Sixth, her mind delighted, dear one, with great child love, caressing and kissing his face, giving endearments. Yashoda, caressing the dear one again and again, holding him close to her heart, kissing his mouth, and having the Sixth worship performed. Worshipping the Sixth, a tilak mark is placed on the young prince's forehead, golden mark applied, the Braj women, holding golden plates, make it beautiful. With eyes filled with affection, asking "May you live long, may there never be sorrow, may your eyes be filled [with joy]." Surdas says: Prabhu, may you live long, bringing happiness to every house. Surdas says: Prabhu, may you live long forever, bringing happiness to every house. The Braj Queen, after performing the Sixth worship, is scattering jewels, pearls, and gems.
A large crowd has gathered of the old gopis of Braj. We will also perform the sixth day worship for Lala. Then the cowherd boys and the gopas worship, and the women of Braj worship. May Shri Vitthal, Girdhar, live forever. The residents of Braj are asking with folded hands. From the creator they are asking just one thing. They are asking, may Lala be immortal. May Lala be immortal. All the Brajvasis are blessed. The Lord who gives blessings to the world is focused on all the elders and great ones who have come for the sixth day worship. All give blessings to Lala. We too bless Lala with all our hearts. By the strength of Lala's name, by the strength of Lala's name alone do we bless Lala. And truly, if you ask, by the strength of Lali on whom Lala depends, we also bless Lala. And we also bless Lali. May this pair live forever. May they be immortal. My beloved Lal, my life's beloved, my life's sustainer, may you be immortal. Night vigils have taken place. For five or six days all the Brajvasis have been exhausted. In the bliss of love, in the Lord's great joy, the entire Braj region is immersed.
Slowly the time of dusk is approaching. This time is strengthening for night creatures. Meanwhile, according to scripture the musicians are celebrating with joy. Various instruments are playing. Someone is playing the mridang. Someone is playing the upang. Someone is playing the vina. Someone is playing the flute. The sound of rhythm, mridang, upang, and flute is resounding. All the Brajvasis—whoever you look at—are turning towards Nanda's house. Putana, Kansa knew very well, is one who had the power to kill even the great gods with a pinch. When she learned that my killer has been born, she became fully convinced. Devarshi Narad had said that the Nanda and gopis of Braj are not ordinary humans. They are all eternal companions of God. This means that if my killer was born anywhere, it would be in Braj, because the father is not an ordinary man. Kansa said to Putana: Go and kill all the children in the Braj region who have been born within the last ten days. The Ashlesha constellation is present. It is the time of dusk. This is the poison hour constellation. In this, the power of demons increases. The death yoga is present. The Ashlesha constellation, poison hour, at dusk time—the night-dwelling Putana's huge body began to tremble in her arms. It was as if the power to crush mountain peaks had come into her. She had the power to fly in the sky, the power to assume various forms, the power to shatter mountains. Putana has all this. By Kansa's order—the order had already been given the day the goddess went to the sky and said your killer has been born somewhere. But to enter Braj, her intelligence did not work properly, thinking we have the contract for Braj.
She started killing children in Mathura. And the children born in Mathura were all demons. At that time, those who were born were all demons. She killed thousands of children. Then she suddenly remembered: I was not told to kill here. So who changed my intelligence? Lal Ji did. He thought: let a few six days pass, let the sixth day come. Why should I start from the very first day with your death? For this reason, for six days, let the Brajvasis enjoy themselves. Suddenly it occurred to her that I must kill in the Braj region, and all those who have been born in the Braj region are eternal companions of God who have appeared.
Putana or any demon or demoness—their power works only where the Lord's name is not sung in kirtan, where the Lord's story is not told, and where the water from the feet of the Lord's devotees has never touched any house. Only there do ghosts and spirits wander about. People say, don't they, that your inner orbit is not right, so external wandering attacks you. Now Putana froze, because the very singing and telling of the name and story—never mind that—the Lord whose name is being sung and whose story is being told is directly present. The Lord first of all changed her intelligence, so that she would not have the courage to go to any Brajvasi's house.
She froze. Meanwhile she saw a crowd moving, commotion was happening. Nanda's Lala has been born. It occurred to her: let me start from here. Victory be! We have saved the Brajvasi children. No—she was trying to kill the eternal companions. She was trying to harm the Lord's retinue. For this reason, the Lord directly drew her into the Braj region. Welcome to you. Come, it is the sixth day, Lal. When Maharaj drew her, she thought: if I go in this terrible form, I will not be allowed through. Because there are large bows with strings drawn, and the great cowherds are stationed around Nanda's house, alert and watchful. King Nanda Baba is the crown jewel of Braj's cowherds. He is expert in all knowledge, and he has thousands of bow-bearing warriors. So she said: if I break their sharp arrows or cause trouble, why should I assume such a form? That illusionist contemplated her form and resolved: Urvashi, Rambha, Ghritachi, Menaka, Pram Locha, Chitralekha, Tilottama—all these apsaras—their beauty I will assume. She assumed such a beautiful form, at the age of sixteen, taking from these supreme apsaras—someone's eyes, someone's arms, someone's limbs—she assumed that form such that no beautiful woman in the three worlds, not even the apsaras like Urvashi, Alambusha, Rambha, Ghritachi, Menaka, Pram Locha, Chitralekha, and Trilottama could match her beauty.
And she was moving about, fluttering as she walked. Every Braj cowherd who saw her said: Lakshmi Ji herself has come. All bowed down. Nothing was affecting anyone. Those who are mad for Shyam are not affected by lust, and those mad for lust do not see Shyam in their sight. These are all mad for Shyam. So no one thought she was very beautiful and lust arose. No—everyone was feeling that Goddess Lakshmi Ji has come. The Lord of the three worlds is pleased with Nanda Baba, so no one asks Lakshmi to come see Nanda Lala. Everyone was giving way.
Mother celebrates the sixth day ritual for the baby and is delighted. She arrives in a form to harm him, and in the courtyard the Dhani are dancing. "My heart is joyful! I have come from Govardhan. Hearing that you have a son, I woke up in great urgency. I am a Dhani - we are dancing. I have come from Girinath. I heard you have had a son. All who came to us as beggars have gone away fulfilled - beggars and mendicants who heard the news from afar and came from great distances. We have fulfilled everyone's hopes. One hope had been waiting for many days - now they are adorned with ornaments, gems, precious things and fine clothes. We found treasures on the way - as if some king were going. Today those who left as beggars departed as if they were emperors. Everyone has such abundance and prosperity - great heavy garlands of gold, gems and ornaments.
"You are supremely generous, Nanda. Whatever we ask, you give."
Eho kaun tridhuvaan mein tum sariisaa ko keeno - "And who else like you exists in the three worlds? Today whatever anyone has asked, you, Father, have given everything. I have come from Girinath - I am a Dhani. Even if you gave me crore times, I would have no desire. It seems this is not what I want - I do not want what you have given to everyone.
"Without seeing him once, just give the baby to my arms, and then take him back. That is all we need. Everyone was asking for that. That is the only blessing we all desired."
When Nanda heard her request, "Very well, friend, my time to leave has come. But you must listen to my prayer - I will go when you hear me out." She signaled her companions. Drums and percussion began - the clapping, the flute - and the dance started. "As long as you do not give the baby to my arms, our dancing will continue, Nanda. Listen to my prayer - my departure will be auspicious only when you give the baby to my arms."
Father heard her prayer. Mother took the baby and put him in her arms. When the Dhani held him, she said, "Now I will not leave. I have come from Girinath - grant me grace, O Girinath. May whatever I came asking for come to pass. Let Yasumati's son come crawling on his own feet and play in the courtyard. Until then we will stay here. Until he walks on his own feet and plays in the courtyard, we will not leave. When Hari speaks and says something in his voice, when we hear his words, then we will go home. We will be the Dhani of your household," says Surdas. "Surdas is telling us, 'I have been sold to your household, dear one. I have seen the baby, but I have never seen such a baby that now I have no wish to leave. Now I will not go home.'
"When he begins to walk on his own feet, when he speaks to us in his voice, only then will we leave. Here there is joy. The Dhani is creating joy, and Putana is coming to destroy that joy.
Cutting through the crowd, when she spoke like this, no one had the strength to stay still. Everyone moved aside, because she is supremely magical - so beautiful a form that everyone moves away. The cowherd people, as if she is drawing them with a picture, the peaceful Nanda's household - she is moving toward it. The gods of Braj. The Braj people say, 'Some goddess has come,' or 'Some divine power.' Some say, 'It is the wealth of the three worlds.' Some say, 'No, this is the embodiment of the wealth of the three worlds coming. It seems as if lightning has taken form. It seems as if crores of moons have taken one form - this beautiful woman who is going to see the son of Nanda.'
Toward Nanda's house, the gopi wives - with suspicious glances the cowherd women who were wives of the cowherds looked and saw that something did not seem right about this beautiful woman. But no one had the courage to speak. She wore a garland of flowers, with heavy hips, a thin waist, broad breasts, swaying cloth, ear ornaments shaking - as if lightning was flashing - gleaming, her beautiful wavy hair, a soft smile on her lips, and anger in her eyes, because she is going to kill. When the gopis see this from her eyes, they feel something is not right, her intention is not pure. But no one can speak. She carries a lotus flower in her hand, waving it.
The Braj women look toward the gopis with keen eyes. It seems as if Lakshmi is searching for her husband. The gopis and cowherd people give her way. She arrives where Nanda's son sits. Yashoda is in the temple, caressing her dark child. "Putana has come, impelled by time and death. The baby has not yet gone even once from the cradle to the crib. The baby's eyes are closing. Mother saw that for six days there has been commotion. My baby has not slept. Now I think I should put the baby to sleep.
Golden jeweled cradles made by skilled craftsmen with many kinds of toys - pearls and gem-adorned precious cradles, and beautiful playthings for the child Krishna to play with in the cradle. When Mother put the baby in the cradle for sleep - the baby Krishna is sleeping, the cradle is being rocked. The thirty-three crore gods and celestial beings cover the sky in wonder. They marvel that what does not come to the meditation of the great sages, Yashoda is rocking in the cradle. 'Sleep, dear one, in such comfort - he whose end even Brahma does not know, whom Shiva sees on his fortunate days, now look at Nanda and Yashoda in their joy!'
Harsi harsi halve ulasat hasat karat kailkari - joyfully they play and laugh in delight.
Their heart's desires grow. The divine Krishna, the friend of his devotees, creates many forms of play. Mother rocks him in the cradle - she is rocking the Brahman, the Supreme Self, in the cradle. Shiva, Brahma and others, whose worship she performs, Yashoda is rocking the Lord. She rocks him and soothes him, then lifts him up from the cradle. 'Krishna, Krishna, come now, come, come, come.' When the Lord saw, was a demoness coming or was she coming with love? He feared she might not reveal her true form, so the Lord closed his eyes. Mother said, 'The baby is asleep, be quiet.' Moving quietly, the enchantress arrived in Nanda's home, wearing a wonderful form, fascinating in her beauty, with makeup that killed demons. She placed some poison on her breast, disguised as a nurse, a devoted woman. She sat where Yashoda was in the temple. Yashoda's mother was confused as if enchanted. 'Such a beautiful goddess has come to visit our home.' She gestured to the baby. The baby tightly closed his eyes. The baby closed his eyes because the joy is just beginning and now he must deal with this demoness. The Lord closed his eyes. This Putana is pure ignorance itself.
One who commits sin. God thought that if He looked at the face of this sinful woman from the very beginning, it would bring calamity. He would not look at her face. He closed His eyes. She came with the intention of killing My companions. She is a heinous offender. He would not look at her face. And in this lifetime she has not done any sadhana. In previous lives she has not sung any bhajan. But she is coming before Me with the sentiment of a mother. That is, she will breastfeed Me. If I look at her face, compassion may arise. Therefore God closed His eyes. God reflected in His mind that ultimately she would only be giving milk to drink.
Even if there is poison, still she would be giving milk to drink. She is performing the first duty of My mother. Therefore if I look, compassion will arise. And countless universes dwell in God's belly. And she has come with the poison of halahal smeared on it. Therefore God closed His eyes and said to Lord Shankara: You drink, I will manage. Because infinite universes dwell in My belly. Once I drank the red poison of the ocean churning to protect all beings in the universe. So you see, O Lord, you have the practice of drinking poison. And drinking milk and eating butter is Mine. I will handle that. You do the rest. Therefore Krishna began meditating on Lord Shankara. Lord Sri Krishna reflected that the people of Braj feed Me butter and sugar candy, and on the sixth day she came to give poison. This is very wicked. The sixth day was meant to be a celebration, and I am the independent God. But I will give her a very good destination. A destination not obtainable from the path of the moon and the path of the sun, not from uttarayan and dakshinayan.
Therefore God closed both eyes because in God's eyes is the sun and moon. She will not go from your paths; she will go directly to the supreme abode.
God thought: Putana's eyes are given by Me alone. If our eyes were to meet, she would forget to give poison. She would surely forget. If eyes were to meet in love, the attraction would draw her back there. In love God said: You cannot give love, but I can give you the supreme abode. I cannot give you love. Therefore God closed His eyes.
In Sri Krishna's eyes, Dharma resides. And the embodied form of Dharma, King Nimi, is present. In everyone's eyes. God said: It is not right to see her with these eyes of Dharma. Therefore He closed His eyes.
She has another name: Baki. Putana's name is Baki. So God said: My eyes are like royal swans. Why would I look at a crane? Therefore He closed His eyes.
God, My eyes have such an effect. As soon as My eyes fall, as soon as My gaze falls, one forgets their individuality and attains My form. And she who came to do this deed will not be able to accomplish it. Therefore God closed His eyes.
Just as Tadka in the Ram incarnation, Putana in the Krishna incarnation—this is ignorance, this is the ignorance-illusion. The thought came to Sri Krishna's mind: If My compassionate gaze fell on her, then the fierce gaze will not happen. If the fierce gaze fell, she would be destroyed. She would not even be able to come close. Therefore He did not give both gazes. He closed them.
God thought: My eyes possess immense power. Because they are endowed with great yogic vision. Anything can happen. Anything can happen in My eyes. Therefore He closed His eyes.
Putana came with determination that she would kill all the children of Braj. And God's vow is that not even a hair of His devotee is harmed. Therefore the leela power led her directly to Nand's home. God was very angry. She came to destroy My devotees. I will not look at her face. She who wants to harm My beloved devotees—therefore God did not look at her form.
Putana, hiding her fearsome form, assumed an illusory form. If God's gaze fell on her, the illusory form would be destroyed and her fearsome form would be revealed. Therefore God closed His gaze.
Putana came with a violent heart. God will fulfill that very sentiment and give her the supreme abode through that very violence.
God, the treasury of virtues, out of compassion closed His eyes. Mother Yashoda gestured—the child is resting there. Like a sharp blade hidden in velvety cloth, so too is cruel Putana hidden in such a beautiful form. But to look at, she appears as a most beautiful woman, a graceful lady. Dazzled by her beauty, even Rohini could not stop her.
Yashoda gave a sign. The fearsome demoness looks at Lord Sri Krishna like a hunter looking at prey.
God lies quiet with eyes closed. She picks up God in her lap. And quickly opens her breasts. She places them in God's mouth. There is a very terrifying emotion. But supreme purity merged with God. She gave the milk from her breast to God's sacred mouth. The halahal poison is smeared on it.
God said: Hail, Great God! You drink the poison, I am drinking the milk. Where Hari is, there is Shiva; where Shiva is, there is Hari. Shiva brings welfare, liberation, the supreme abode.
God said: Be angry at her, Shankara. Because anger is your destructive form. The service of destruction belongs to you alone. The service of creation belongs to Brahma. The service of sustenance belongs to Hari. And the service of destruction belongs to Lord Shankara. He invoked Shankara.
Lord Sri baby Krishna Chandra assumed terrible wrath. With both hands He grabbed her breast. And placed His feet on her chest. Oh, what fortune, what fortune! The minds of the sages meditate and attain this.
Both lotus feet on the chest. Thus He firmly grasped and began to drink. God drank the milk, Shiva drank the poison, and anger drank the life force.
Because she made anger her companion. God is an embodiment of compassion. Such great compassion. Look, she should have received hell. Because she came to kill God, she should have suffered greatly.
Now when Putana saw and fear arose, and as soon as God's feet touched her, her beautiful form vanished fleeing, and across six kosh—six kosh is 18 kilometers—in that terrible form, Putana's, let go, let go! The entire Braj trembled with such a cry. Let go, let go! With hair disheveled in terrible form, the gopis and cowherds all froze. God was drawing out her life-breath. Again and again she was thrashing her hands and feet and crying. Her eyes rolled back, she was drenched in sweat. A terrible shrieking—let go, let go! The earth and sky trembled. It seemed as if a thunderbolt had struck. Putana was crying out like this. The demoness Putana suffered greatly in her very being.
She could not hide herself. In that demonic form, in one moment God drew out her life-breath. Her hair was disheveled. Her hands and feet splayed out. Just as Vritrasur wounded by Indra's thunderbolt fell, so she fell in the cowherd settlement. All the trees across six kosh were destroyed. She died herself and devastated everything. The trees of Braj that are most sacred—across six kosh—because her six-kosh body was such a terrible form. First, her face was beautiful, but her teeth were like ploughs with such large pointed nostrils like a mountain cave, her breasts like a mountain peak.
Red hair scattered, eyes like blind wells, terrible and dark, thick thighs like bridges across rivers, such a large belly, and this little cowherd boy. The gopis and cowherds all feared. Everyone's ears split. What happened? Everyone ran. Those who hold the dear child Lala as their master—everyone ran. We will have to flee. Where will a chest be where God is? Then all the Braj residents ran. Somehow everyone ran and reached there, running. They picked up Shri Krishna from that demoness's chest. Putana received that state that Yashoda Mother received. How merciful our God is! When she gave her milk out of enmity, our dear child gave her the same state that Yashoda Mother would receive.
If you feed milk with love, mixing in fine sugar, what supreme state would remain unattainable? Therefore it is said: keep the deity installed at home, everyone. The small Thakur Ji, the Thakur is installed. In a glass, two hundred grams of milk, add a little sugar or candy, feed it with such love. When you are making offerings, fan it with your own hands. Lentils, bread, puri, kachori—whatever you make, fan it with your own hands like this, and nurture it. Do not consider the deity as just a statue. We are telling you truly: "Whichever feeling dwells in the devotee's heart, in that way the Lord's image appears to him."
Just think with love, love—how our Lord is giving the highest state to one who came to poison him. You will make offerings, you will feed him milk, you will embrace him, you will put him to sleep. You will not receive the supreme state. What sadhana or service could be greater than this?
When you embrace him like this, it feels that there is no state greater than this—the Lord in our embrace. The Lord! How can we tell you? Do not consider this installed deity as just an image. If you consider it merely as an image, it will remain merely an image. But if you consider this installed deity as the Lord Himself standing there, then He will sit in your head and instruct: do this, do this, do this. From this story we receive the teaching that my God is so compassionate...
With leaf, flower, fruit offered by the devotee—this is not from devotion. You are offering it with the intention to kill him, yet God is giving the supreme state. Yashoda Mother ran to her dear child. How much misfortune has befallen! This evil demoness has taken our Lala away. Radhe, Radhe, Radhe! Rohini Ji took him in her lap. Yashoda Mother, wiping with the cow's tail, "May all misfortune be removed. May my Lala's welfare be assured."
The protection of the child Shri Krishna's limbs, proper cowherd care and such—Yashoda, Rohini, and the attendants protected the child completely with proper cowherd care. This is definite. Therefore scripture is the proof. Yashoda, Rohini, and the attendants protected the child completely with proper cow-tail care. By waving the cow's tail like this, no spell, magic, or evil eye touches the child. By this method, Yashoda Mother and Rohini Mother took him near the cows and then what did they do? Then they protected God through God's names.
This is a very auspicious story. God's names protect God. The cowherds perform auspicious rituals for the child... with various names and attributes of God... Narayana, the radiant, bright-minded, the Yogeshwar, the wise Lord, Govind, Shyam-pati, Madhav, dwelling in Vaikunta, the great Lord—the terrible, unborn God—may my Lala's feet be protected. The jeweled God, may the knees be protected.
May Yajna Purush Bhagwan protect your thighs. May Achut Bhagwan protect your waist, may Keshav Bhagwan protect your heart, may Ishwar Bhagwan protect your chest, may Surya Bhagwan protect your throat, may Vishnu Bhagwan protect your arms, may Ukram Bhagwan protect your face, may Ishwar Shri protect you. May Chakradhar Bhagwan protect my child. Standing in front, Gadhadhari Bhagwan Shri Hari standing behind. Bhagwan Madhusudan carrying the bow and khad on both sides, the Shankh-bearer on all four corners, Upendra Vaman Bhagwan above, Haldhara on the earth, Bhagwan Param Purush protect you from all sides. May Rishikesh Bhagwan protect your senses, may Narayana Bhagwan protect your life force, may Shwet Deep Bhagwan protect your consciousness, may Yogeshwar protect your mind, may your senses be protected. May Param Atma Bhagwan protect your intellect and your ego. When playing may Govind Bhagwan protect you, when sleeping may Madhav Bhagwan protect you, while walking may Vaikunth Nath protect you, while sitting may Shripati protect you, during meals may the Yajna-eater Bhagwan who strikes fear into the planets protect you. The gopis bound this kavach for Shri Lal Ji. There are only a few shlokas like this. Those who don't know the shloka in Hindi say "witch, plaguemaker, demon hordes, ghosts, spirits, pishacha, yaksha, rakshasa, Vinayak" — whether it be witches, ghosts, spirits, demons, kushmanda, planets, constellations, pishacha, yaksha, rakshasa, Vinayak — no obstacle will touch the life of one who wears this kavach every day.
These are just five or six shlokas. Whether it be any ghost, spirit, pishacha, yaksha, rakshasa, witch, dakin, any curse of attraction and control, there are just six shlokas against it. Dakini, rakshasi, kushmanda, child-afflicting planets, ghosts, spirits, pishacha, yaksha, rakshasa, Vinayak, kotra, Revati, Jeshtha, Putana, Matrika — destruction of the body, life force and senses, madness, nightmares, unclean dreams, epilepsy, seizures, terrible diseases, calamities, powerful planets, child-afflicting planets — none of this will have any effect on one for whom Yashoda Maiya and Rohini Ji are binding this kavach over Lalu. Bhagwan is protecting Bhagwan through Bhagwan's names.
The gopis, becoming love itself, protected Bhagwan Shri Krishna through Bhagwan Shri Krishna's names. Then the mother gave Lal the milk from her breasts. At that very moment Nand Baba and all the cowherd people arrived in Gokul from Mathura. They saw a terrifying sight. They said what a wonder this is. Vasudev Ji had said go quickly, some incident is about to happen. It seems to us that in Vasudev Ji's form some rishi has taken birth, or Vasudev Ji is some yogeshwar, because how did he know to go quickly? No, some calamity was about to happen in Mahavan.
By then the residents of Braj had chopped Putana into pieces with their axes and, going to an empty field, piled her up like a mountain and set fire to it. The wonder was that the smoke rising from Putana's body when fire touched her had a fragrance more purifying than aguru incense — because Bhagwan had drunk her milk. Putana became sinless. Look, brother, Putana was a local demoness, blood-drinker, and Hari gave her salvation. Where was Putana the rakshasi, the blood-drinker, and where is the ultimate state! Bhagwan gave her the supreme liberation that saints and great souls obtain only with great rarity.
Kirn purah shraddha bhakt krishnaya paramatmne yachhan pritam kirnn raktah matra yatha.
So if someone offers to our Bhagwan Shri Krishna with faith and bhakti, with tenderness and maternal affection, with deep love their most beloved possession, they attain the supreme state. What is the supreme state? Those feet that are praised by Brahma, Shankara and others through meditation — Bhagwan placed Putana's chest against those very feet. Therefore Putana attained the supreme state.
True, she was a rakshasi. But she received that supreme liberation which a mother receives. Then think of the cows of Braj whose milk Bhagwan drank. Think of the residents of Braj in whose love and affection Bhagwan stole butter again and again. In secret, through His leela He gave them joy. Bhagwan gives all types of liberation and everything to all. The gopis and cows of Braj who saw Bhagwan Shri Krishna every day and night as their son — because of the abundance of maternal affection and love flowing naturally from the father-child relationship — Bhagwan drank that milk fully and completely. Every cow, every gopi who forever saw Bhagwan Shri Krishna as their own son — they all attained the supreme state. They all attained it. When the smoke of burnt Putana reached Nand Baba and the residents of Braj, they said we have never experienced such a fragrance before. When everyone reached home they heard the full account of Putana, embraced Lal to their hearts saying he has been saved safely — Bhagwan's grace is so great. Yet in everyone's hearts there was a sorrow. In everyone's hearts from this event there was a sorrow — where was all this joy coming from? Where did this wicked Putana come from? Who sent her? How did she come? All these thoughts were running through their minds when at that very moment Devadhidev Mahadev stood at the door. To bring joy and auspiciousness once again. One gopi ran away saying O mother, Putana just came and now who is this intoxicated yogi who has arrived at your door! O mother, mother, this is why the serpent, the ash, the dread-locked one wearing serpents, Pashupati, Kapaali with ghosts — such a fearsome Bhagwan! O mother, what a terrifying father has come to the door! Yet he is so beautiful, camphor-colored, and sometimes in leela takes such a fearsome form. There must have been joy in it. That's why everyone's state had to change. This incident of Putana had to be forgotten. The one with matted locks and Ganga dwelling in his hair, the three-eyed one pleased the mind...
Mounted on a bull, he has come to Sri Gokul, a mad yogi has come through the door. O Mother, who is this baba that has come to our doorway? He is mounted on a bull. Ganga Ji sits enthroned on his head. He has three eyes. A tiger skin and an elephant skin are beautiful on his body. His body is smeared with ash, the sacred ash adorns his form. He carries a trident in his hand and a damru and a horn. He is playing a horn sound in his hand—in one hand a horn and in the other a trident and he is playing the horn sound. His eyes are red, fierce red eyes that have risen up. How do they look? Vijay says that the lovers whom he has anointed have eyes that spin with intoxication when they see the form—their eyes become red and it is as if they are in an intoxication, you will see them in a daze, eyes spinning in madness—their eyes are spinning from the intoxication of divine love. Those who are lovers of God, to recognize their eyes—Lord Shiva is a Vaishnava by name as it is. And the eyes are longing for the form and beauty of the Lord. He is saying his eyes are red, anointed with intoxication—it seems he has eaten datura, or chewed opium, or eaten bhang. His eyes are rolling red and red. The people of Braj and...
Above the dot-mark on his forehead the yogi has made his form. The moon of the second day sits like a crown on the head of Lord Shiva. The very embodiment of compassion, the very form of mercy. As fearsome as his form is, just as merciful is another form—Ashutosh, the giver, and he does not hesitate in giving, such is his great grace. Kesava is so beautiful that the Goddess Tripura Sundari, the Mother, is captivated. He is so beautiful and yet so fearsome is Shankar that if he were to appear in his form, only God himself could see him—no one else has the ability to look upon him. Such a fearsome Shankar is he. And yet he is like camphor in brilliance, the embodiment of compassion—as white as camphor, truly very peaceful in form. So the moon-dot on his forehead and the yogi has made his form, and the rudraksha garland sits in the middle. The great serpent Shesha is coiled around him. The serpent has wrapped around the rudraksha beads are also his garland and Lord Shesha himself sits around his neck.
What does this yogi need? Ask him why has he come? The gopis go and say, where have you come from? Why have you come here? We have come from Kashi. Now this yogi has mounted the bull. He says to the beautiful gopis, do not bring him inside. He has come in a very fearsome form from Kashi. Who is he? What does he want? Whatever you ask for will be given. What does he need? Gold, silver, diamonds, jewels? No, none of this. We are yogis. We do not need all this. What do we need? Just once, give the little one to our lap. If we touch him with our matted hair then forever and ever he will never be afflicted by an evil eye. The matted hair is full of serpents.
And Yashoda Mother does not know that the little one sleeps on serpents. He rests on the bed of Shesha Nag. What does he have to fear? Whatever you ask for will be given. Show the child to him respectfully. You are saying he will not be afflicted by an evil eye. We are saying your evil eye will fall upon him. His crying will never stop in his lifetime. Such is your form. Lord Shiva said, you will not listen. We will not leave. And he sat down in the lotus position right there. Know that the inner witness is ever Shiva—if you will not listen like this, then Radha [sound of crying] Radha Radha [sound of crying] Radha Radha Radha Radha Radha [sound of crying] Radha Radha [sound of crying] Radha Radha [sound of crying] Radha [sound of crying] Radha Radha [sound of crying] Radha Radha [sound of crying] Radha Radha Radha Radha Radha. Now then, forever, Shiva through remembrance of Radha's name—on the other side, the little one began to cry, to crawl toward Shri's feet, to cry. Now everyone is troubled. The yogi's miracle is that the Mother realized she should show him from a distance.
She took the little one in her hand and went in front. Lord Shiva gestured—if he is to come to the lap and he cried even louder. Lord Shiva said, Mother, even now listen to me. If you give the little one to our lap and he does not become quiet, then you will say and he will not be quiet—he will coo with joy. So he looked toward the gopis. He said, give him. Yashoda Mother said, the serpent that you had before, take it away from us. So the Lord said to Shesha, go back, go back. And the little one has no fear. That is his bed. The Mother has fear. He came closer and said, you will have to give him to my lap.
Ah! When she gave him, with one hand he waved over the little one, placed his hand on his head, his hair on his head, caressing him like this, saying, the feet are the support—this is just our external play. Lord, lift your feet and place them on our head. Playing, playing, the little one swung and Lord Shiva became so delighted, all suffering went away. The sound of cooing arose from his body—the cooing of Nanda's little one came forth. He said, look Mother, the crying has stopped. Mother said, the problem has been solved. Oh baba, do not go to Kashi and stay here in Nanda's village. Whenever the little one cries, we will bring him to you, you wave your hand. Then he said, Mother, I promise—even today I sit below in Nanda's house. You go see where the little one's bath water is, there below is Nanda's house. Mother, every day I will hold this bath water and when your little one cries, let joy arise in Nanda's queen, she gave a pearl garland, worn by the little one, stay oh yogi in Nanda's house, stay stay stay, do not go first, the Mother had said, go away from here and wait, when we found one way—when the little one cries, wave your hand, baba, then he will coo with joy, so she said, do not go. When he cries, we will bring him to your lap, you wave your hand. Stay, oh yogi.
Make Nand Bhawan my residence in Braj, Lord. When the child cries, give him darshan each time. You are a supreme yogi, very wise. The Vedas describe you. We are called an old yogi. The gods know Shyamsundar, the gods know Shyamsundar. Then with joined hands, he prayed to Shiv: Open the child's eyes, O Surdas Swami. Shankar completely. Walking along, eyes met eyes. The Lord said: This is it, this is it. Cry once every day. If you cry once every day, then I will be called to you every day, and every day I will receive your touch.
Lord Shiv is still residing in Nand's house today. Lord Shiv has just arrived. Just then came a Brahmin deity. Hari Om, mother Hari Om. Kansa sent him alone. Kansa sent the Brahmin Shridhar. The Brahmin Shridhar, an executioner by deed. Kansa spoke these words to him. When Kansa heard the news that Putana was killed and gone—the combined might of the scriptures and the gods defeated Putana—this means the one who will kill me is from a former birth. When I was Death personified, Sri Hari killed me. So that's who it is, now it's certain. Just then Shridhar the Pandit arrived. Victory to Maharaj. Why are you worried, Lord? I am your obedient servant. Come, kill Nand's son, Lord. If you command it, it is already the seventh day now. Definitely we will come prepared with your plan and kill him. Definitely we have this much mantra power, this much skill, so you rest assured. I will kill him.
Kansa said: So be it. Go at once, don't delay. Are you really able to do this? We will give you whatever fee you ask. Go, kill and come back. Now he was thinking: with our power of killing and enchantment, we will destroy Nand's son. But he didn't know that the Lord is the Great Death, even greater than Death itself. His body is only that of a Brahmin, but his heart is that of a demon. He came sent by Kansa. To take the life of Yashoda's son is his intention, his resolve. When anyone comes, he will first recite mantras. He is a Brahmin. Yashoda Mother, come, come Pandit Ji. Come, come Rohini Ji. Yashoda rushed and washed his feet. Many sages and Brahmins like him keep coming. Nand's queen looked at his feet, looked at his face. He is a Brahmin, but something doesn't seem right about him. Rohini Ji honored and seated him. Shridhar came to Nand Bhawan. Yashoda got up and bowed her head. Maharaj, you have come around 11 o'clock, so the kitchen will be ready soon. You will have rajbhog. Yes, yes, certainly. Yashoda Ji was preparing the kitchen. He thought to himself: this is a good opportunity, now the boy will come. He set his mind on killing. Only then will you know God's play. He began thinking of ways to kill the Lord.
God saw: Hey, Brahmin! You killed Putana, the demon, and she is gone. Don't kill the Brahmin. I will not grant you blessing. When the Brahmin came, Hari came down. Seizing his hand, Hari threw him down. Shridhar the Brahmin gathered courage and thought: I will press the throat with my thumb and kill the small Gopala along with it. As soon as he did this, God seized him. When his hand with the thumb reached the throat to press, God grabbed it and lifted him. He fell to the side. God looked on. The child cannot see. Because the child would complain. If it was so hard. God got up quickly on the seventh day, kicked him in the chest, grabbed and twisted his tongue. [Sound of throat clearing] Meaning, he left him unable to speak. The tongue was finished. And breaking the nearby pot, he spread butter around, and bringing some butter, he applied it to the demon's mouth. He remained in the cradle. Then he went and lay down in the cradle and started crying. Krishna crying! Mother Jasmati came and got water. Jasmati thought: the offering is being prepared anyway, let me give the Pandit some sweet water to drink. When she came back, she saw the child was crying, and the Brahmin was hitting him. Butter was smeared all over his mouth, everything was spread about. Seeing the child cry with butter, she became anxious. She said: What did you do, Brahmin? This is injustice, Brahmin deity. What have you done? The child was sleeping peacefully, now he's crying. Did you do something? Now the Lord, the master of speech, sitting there, finished the Brahmin. The Brahmin cannot speak from his mouth, and if he's alive, he should be able to explain. Now God changed his condition. Now he can speak from his tongue. He said: I was so hungry, I would have told you. I would have given you butter beforehand. Why did you break the pot? You made the child cry, broke the pot. And besides, if I got hungry so quickly, you should have told us. You are a Brahmin deity, yet you came with harmful intent towards the Lord. But he did not recognize Braj's Lord.
God shows grace by granting absorption in devotion to the one he favors. What the sages pray for is stability. When God gave him back his tongue, the memory of God awakened in his heart. Because God sat on his chest, and here is Baby Govind, and the tongue is fine, so the memory of God awakened in his heart. The demon is present. Yashoda Mother is watching his condition. The Brahmin cannot speak from his mouth. He cannot say anything, but he keeps looking again and again at Nand's son, displaying inauspicious signs. In his eyes was Shyamsundar, and in his heart God's glory was revealed. No Braj resident could understand. Nor could Braj's queen understand. Mother was absorbed in pampering the child, and now his tears began to flow. He couldn't say anything more. He started crying loudly. Yashoda Mother asked: Why are you crying? But he was unable to speak.
From that day on, his heart was so transformed that he did not return to Kansa. He stayed in Braj region, worshipped Krishna, became a lover of Krishna, and attained God. Blessed is God's incarnation. However anyone connects with God, He grants them the highest state. And blessed is God's play and name. God refined select ones like Shridhar and killed select demons. But God's name and play have brought countless demons and demon-natured beings to the attainment of God.
God's naam is all-powerful in attaching one to God, and God's leela even more so. Therefore, chant God's naam abundantly. Sing God's leela and listen to the leela. Protect this sacred human body from misdeeds, sinful acts, and those that bring harm, and dedicate it to God's refuge. The rest of the discussion came. Shri Radha Vallabh Lal
