The Complete Discourse
Once, while God was conversing with Devarsee Narad Ji, He said in jest that whoever performs My bhajan while living as a householder, I give them special importance. Devarsee Narad Ji said, "Lord, the detached one burns throughout their entire life. There is no entertainment. They must renounce worldly pleasures from the heart and devote themselves to God, keeping the mind away from worldly enjoyments. It is a very difficult life. If an ascetic lives this very difficult life with sincerity, it is one thing. If lived without sincerity, then one can act as they please. But if lived with sincerity, it is a very difficult existence."
Only by renouncing worldly pleasures can one devote themselves to God's bliss. So Devarsee Narad Ji asked, "Why do You give priority to householder devotees?" Then He said, "Devarsee Narad Ji, will you do something for Me?"
God turned the conversation around completely. He filled a bowl with ghee and said, "Circumambulate around My seat with this; the Sudarshan Chakra will follow behind you. Not even a single drop should fall." Following God's command, Narad continuously chanted 'Narayan, Narayan,' yet his entire consciousness was focused on the bowl—fearing that even one drop might spill. The Sudarshan Chakra followed behind. God then said, "Just this one bowl of ghee stole away your divine remembrance. And a householder has a son, children, relatives, and innumerable duties to attend to. If, while performing all those duties, they still perform My bhajan, then they are My supreme devotee."
