There is a story in the Mahabharata of a Guru who commanded his disciple: "Go build an embankment in the field so that the rainwater flowing can drain out." But the disciple did not know how to build it. They tried to build it but it would not hold. So they lay down in it and lay there so it would hold, so that the water could drain out as the Guru had commanded. The whole night passed, it was cold, the body kept shaking, and they did not move.
When morning came, he said, "Where is that disciple?" They replied, "Maharaj Ji, you sent them to build the embankment." "They have not returned? Why? Come, let us go with the disciples."
He called out, and the disciple replied, "Guru Ji, I am here."
He said, "What are you doing there?" The disciple replied, "The embankment would not hold for us, and your command was to build it. So we lay down in it, and then it held. That is why we are lying here."
He said, "You have sacrificed your body and your very life for me, without regard for yourself. Go forth."
And when his grace-filled gaze fell upon them, the knowledge of the four Vedas was revealed to them without study, and the knowledge of Bhagavat became illuminated.
