How to Do Penance for Mistakes Made Unknowingly?
A brief discourse from Pujya Maharaj Ji—to listen to the full talk, watch the video above.
The Full Discourse
Maharaj Ji discusses: how can one remedy faults committed unknowingly, or do they become transgressions? Look, sins committed unknowingly are experienced in dreams. The suffering that comes from seeing terrible nightmares torments the subtle body and mind. But sins committed knowingly are punished upon the body.
For the gross body in the waking state, there are rituals for atonement. There is the chanting of God's name, the service of saints, pilgrimage to holy places, the study of scriptures. In the scriptures there are many sin-destroying hymns—recite those hymns, visit sacred places, serve the saints, do naam jap, and all sins are destroyed. Sins committed knowingly are destroyed in this way, and sins committed unknowingly are destroyed through punishment in dreams.
Just as when you have a terrifying nightmare and become frightened—that terrible dream is the fruit of some unknowing sin of ours.
